A brief rant on the price of oil: Should we continue to hold out hope for the decrease of gas prices with politicians in office who don't seem to understand the basic laws of economics? What are the ideas of the smart fellows who are campaigning to become the leader of our nation? Well, John McCain thinks we should declare a limit to the amount of profit oil companies can make and require them to "share" the rest. Also, he says there should be pressure on the oil companies to put money into researching alternative fuel sources. Wait a second. Share their profits? This is the United States, and (for who knows how much longer) we are based on a capitalist economy and free market. The oil industry is only making 8.6% profit. Higher then they have made in the past, but a very medium profit range compared to other industries. Well then, why stop with the oil industry? We better monitor the profits of all of the other industries just to make sure nobody is making "obscene profits." Socialism. Period. Sounds fun. As to the second part, why on earth would an oil company want to invest money into something that will put them out of business? How can a politician know so little about business to think that the oil companies would ever put forth any effort to develop alternative fuel forces that would stop the demand for oil? Barak Obama simple says that his only concern is how fast gas prices have gone up.
"I think that I would have preferred a gradual adjustment. The fact that this is such a shock to American pocketbooks is not a good thing. But if we take some steps right now to help people make the adjustment, first of all by putting more money into their pockets, but also by encouraging the market to adapt to these new circumstances more quickly, particularly US automakers, then I think ultimately, we can come out o f this stronger and have a more efficient energy policy than we do right now." http://www.standardnewswire.com/news/563672859.html He sounds like he planned the price increase all along, but then things went wrong and it happened to fast. Well that's great Barack, I'm glad you have confidence that it won't take long before us poor pocketbook-shocked Americans will stop complaining and start happily coughing up $5 a gallon for gas. Oh, and one more thing. China has begun drilling off the coast of Florida. China. But, of course, we can't. If there's any hope it sure doesn't rest in our presidential candidates.
